Valerie Bayne Carroll, an actor and singer, joined the Wolf Trap Institute for Early Learning Through the Arts in 1983 and was the director of the program from 1988 to 1990. She has participated in the development of every aspect of the Institute, including the artist-in-residence model, curriculum materials, the regional programs, national Institute conferences, and field trip performances. She has trained new Institute artists and administrators, as well as conducted workshops and residencies for preschool teachers and children across the country. In addition to presenting Institute workshops and Baby Artsplay! classes, Carroll teaches creative drama in schools throughout the DC area. She received a BFA in theater from Boston University School for the Arts.
Kofi Dennis is a graduate of the School of Performing Arts, University of Ghana, and studied early childhood and adolescent education at Komenda College, University of Cape Coast. He performs as half of the duo Anansegromma, presenting music, dance, drums, games, and stories. Dennis has been teaching creative drama at the Montessori School of Northern Virginia, Annandale, for the past 10 years and has been a Wolf Trap Teaching Artist since 1998. He co-created and performed for many years in Grandmother's Footsteps, an interactive children's performance at The Barns of Wolf Trap. Dennis is also a Wolf Trap Master Teaching Artist who conducts Artsplay! and Baby Artsplay! as well as residencies in early-childhood classrooms. Since 2004, he has teamed up with the faculty of the World Children's Choir to present African drumming for concepts and for peace. His 3 daughters sing with the choir.
Janice Zucker has a Musical Theatre degree from GMU. Her primary art forms are singing, acting, and storytelling. She has been with Wolf Trap since the fall of 2004 where she first taught for the Start Smart pilot program. This program focused on the teaching of head voice singing, steady beat, and matching pitch while also tying them to literacy. When the pilot program ended, she switched over to Wolf Trap’s regular residency program where she’s gotten to use all her primary art forms, again tying them to literacy. She really enjoys working with the children and their teachers, especially seeing how much they progress from the beginning of the residency to the end.
Sylvia Zwi worked as an educator in the state of New York for 5 years before she moved to the DC area. She worked in several different schools including the Stecher and Horowitz School of the Arts where she instructed young children in music. Upon arrival in DC, she secured a job with the Levine School of Music in the Early Childhood Department. She has worked there both with the summer camp and in-house instructing "Exploring Music," "Exploring the Keyboard," and various singing games. She has also participated in the outreach programs of the Frederick Douglas Center, the Devereux Foundation, and FLOC. Originally from Brazil, Zwi speaks both Portuguese and English.
The Center for Education at Wolf Trap is a resource for children, parents, educators, and performing artists.
