Over the past 30 years, Glen McCarthy has been instrumental in developing guitar curriculum throughout Fairfax County. He has taught Guitar Methods, a required course for all Music Education majors at George Mason University, for more than 15 years. At Robinson Secondary School in Fairfax, he has extensively developed the guitar program, which is now an integral part of the music curriculum. “Mr. Mac,” as he is known to his students, was nominated for the 2003-2004 Fairfax County Teacher of the Year Award, received the 2005 Wolf Trap Scholarship for Performing Arts Teachers, adjudicated the 2008 Guitar Solo and Ensemble Festival in Prince George’s County, Maryland, and was guest clinician in the 2007 and 2008 Guitar Foundation of America conventions and the Virginia Tech, Roanoke County, Loudoun County, Virginia, Texas, and National Music Educators conferences. Many of his students have gone on to enjoy successful music careers. He continues to play in big band, bluegrass, Celtic, country, funk, German, Hawaiian, jazz, musicals, praise bands, rock, and numerous wedding groups and ensembles.
