A Prairie Home Companion is heard by more than 4 million listeners each week on more than 576 public radio stations. It is also heard abroad on America One and the Armed Forces Networks in Europe and the Far East.
- Garrison Keillor developed A Prairie Home Companion in 1969 as a 6 a.m. morning program named after the Prairie Home cemetery in Moorhead, Minnesota. After working on an article for the New Yorker magazine about the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, he developed the idea for the radio show featuring musical guests and commercials for imaginary products. The first episode aired live on July 6, 1974.
