The Band’s prestigious drummer/vocalist debuts at Wolf Trap with gritty Grammy Award-winning roots-rock that pairs well with the country-folk of the influential singer/songwriter Hiatt.
Levon Helm got his start as the drummer for Ronnie Hawkins before splitting off on his own to play for the Hawks, which became Bob Dylan’s backing band after going electric. Renamed “The Band” soon after, Helm’s group went on to become one of the most popular and influential groups of the early ’70s.
Dirt Farmer, Helm’s first album in a quarter of a century, was released in 2007 and won a Grammy for Best Traditional Folk Album. His follow-up release, Electric Dirt, just won a 2010 Grammy for Best Americana Album.
John Hiatt's songs were covered successfully by Bonnie Raitt, Iggy Pop, Three Dog Night, and a litany of others before he topped the charts himself with Bring the Family in 1987. He has received 11 Grammy nominations over his career.
