With influences ranging from ancient chants to contemporary Hawaiian songs, Barry Flanagan and Ron Kuala'au perform music that is “beautiful, fragile, spiritual, and powerful” (The Los Angeles Times).

  • By updating the traditional Polynesian sound with tasteful pop and world beat influences, HAPA has created its own unique musical niche and developed a devoted following throughout the Hawaiian islands and beyond.
  • Original members Barry Flanagan (lead guitar, vocals) and Keli'i Kaneali'i began playing together in 1983. Now Flanagan and Ron Kuala'au (lead vocal, rhythm guitar, ukulele) form the core of the group.
  • The group is known for its eclectic covers, performing songs by artists like U2 (“In the Name of Love”), John Lennon (“Imagine”), and Bob Marley (“Redemption Song”).
  • HAPA’s albums have garnered many Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards (the Hawaiian equivalent of the Grammys), including Album of the Year for 2006’s Maui.
  •  “Hypnotic, liquid guitar runs woven around clear, tenor Hawaiian vocals and immaculate harmonies driven by poetic lyrics exulting the rapture of the Hawaiian landscape and history...that’s HAPA.”—Sing Out!
