  • Florida-raised John Medeski started playing piano at 5 and was performing professionally by his teens. Initially seeking a classical music career, he shifted toward improv and folk styles, inspired by African and African-American folk music.
  • In 1991 Medeski cofounded Medeski, Martin & Wood, a New-York based jazz trio that has “coursed through the jazz world and jam-based environs with a funny, smart, and gritty sound all their own” (The Boston Globe).
  • Medeski released A Different Time, his first solo album, this past April. In it, he performs both original takes on legendary folk songs like Willie Nelson’s “I’m Falling in Love Again” and his own compositions, including “Luz Marina,” a heartbreaking tribute to the founder of a Peruvian orphanage who passed away in 2010.
  • A Different Time is an exceptionally sensitive and beautiful recording, the kind of piano music that is too genuine in feeling to be dismissed as dull or simple.”—
  • In an effort to support independent artists, Medeski was a judge for the first Independent Music Awards in 2002.
