  • Grammy Award-winner Bill Frisell is an in-demand contemporary guitarist who has been blending rock energy with jazz spontaneity for more than 4 decades.
  • Big Sur (2013), his most recent album, was commissioned by the Monterey Jazz Festival. Frisell composed the album in 10 days, inspired by the natural beauty of Central California’s Big Sur coastline. The beachfront has been the muse for artists such as The Beach Boys, Jack Kerouac, Death Cab For Cutie, and Ansel Adams, among others.
  • In order to record Big Sur, Frisell collaborated with 2 of his former groups, the 858 Quartet and Beautiful Dreamers, to form Bill Frisell’s Big Sur Quintet. The result is a combination of avant-garde and post-bop jazz with classical, folk, and country influences.
  • The quintet consists of Bill Frisell (guitar), Eyvind Kang (viola), Jenny Scheinman (violin), Hank Roberts (cello), and Rudy Royston (drums).
  • “Big Sur is more than just a musical recording. It’s a sonic novel—instrumental storytelling of the highest caliber delivered by an amazing storyteller. It’s Bill Frisell at his best.”—Downbeat
