Ari Hest

The upcoming Ari Hest performance offers patrons an exclusive chance to witness another Filene Center performer in the intimate Barns at Wolf Trap setting. A wildly prolific singer/songwriter, Hest opened for Sheryl Crow this past summer in support of his latest release, Twelve Mondays. The full length LP is a compilation of the top 12 songs selected by fans from a yearlong project during which he wrote, produced, recorded, and virally released one new song each of the 52 weeks. Hest’s live shows showcase an impressively wide vocal range and hypnotic acoustic techniques that have earned him rightful comparisons to contemporary greats John Mayer, David Gray, and Dave Matthews.

Elizabeth and the Catapult

Fresh off the release of debut album Taller Children this past June, which Paste magazine refers to as exuding a “plucky, shining authenticity,” Elizabeth Ziman and her band Elizabeth and the Catapult offer an endearing blend of playful pop and classic sophistication. Produced by Mike Mogis, best known for his work with M. Ward and Rilo Kiley, Taller Children exudes an indie-pop feel, rooted in the deepest traditions of contemporary jazz and orchestral influence.

Dan Hicks & The Hot Licks
Friday, October 23, 2009 at 8 p.m.
$22

Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks continue to tour in support of their new studio album, Tangled Tales, with a coveted stop at The Barns at Wolf Trap as part of a limited engagement, 10-date fall tour. The album is a brand-new collection of compelling and witty tunes that earned praise from the incomparable Tom Waits as, “fly, sly, wily, and dry!” Credited with pioneering “folk-jazz,” Hicks emerged in the early seventies with a string of successful albums including Where’s the Money (1971), Striking It Rich (1972), and Last Train to Hicksville (1973). Hicks combined forces with the Hot Licks in 1998, and their first record as an ensemble, Beatin’ the Heat, was named one of Time.com’s Top 10 CDs of 2000.

Twice on the cover of Rolling Stone, Hicks has gone on to collaborate with such legendary artists as Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, Bette Midler, Brian Setzer, Willie Nelson, Jimmy Buffett, and Rickie Lee Jones, all of whom were smitten by his counter-culture appeal and sharp-tongued, dry-witted lyrics.
