Popular U.K. reggae act UB40 makes their Wolf Trap debut in support of their June, 2008 release titled TwentyFourSeven. Joining the band on stage as a special guest vocalist is Maxi Priest, international reggae superstar, lead vocalist on TwentyFourSeven, and future collaborator on UB40 live concerts and recordings. Following their humble beginnings in 1978 after a collective meeting in a London welfare line, the band exploded onto the U.K. music scene in 1980 with their platinum selling debut, Signing Off. The release featured the hit single “Food for Thought,” earning them a coveted slot on the U.K. Top 10 charts. Following their debut album, UB40 released a collection of reggae-infused cover songs from some of the industry’s most respected artists, titled Labour of Love. The album produced an internationally recognized rendition of Neil Diamond’s “Red, Red Wine” and a version of Sonny and Cher’s “I Got You Babe” featuring the Pretenders’ Chrissie Hynde. Riding the waves of success from Labour of Love, UB40 followed up with Labour of Love II, with featured cover songs including the Temptations’ “The Way You Do the Things You Do” and Al Green’s “Here I Am (Come and Take Me),” which was the group’s first big success in the American market.

Regeneration Tour 2008

$42 in-house; $25 lawn

Wolf Trap hosts an evening of ’80s artists from the new wave music era at Regeneration Tour 2008, featuring synthesizer-based group The Human League, contemporary pop artist Belinda Carlisle of the Go-Go’s, synth-driven dance-pop group ABC, robotic influenced sounds from A Flock of Seagulls, and rock infused synth group Naked Eyes.

The Human League

English synth pop band The Human League comes to the Filene Center stage showcasing their ‘80s style new wave tunes. Arguably the world’s first international synth pop superstars, the Human League innovatively broke into the pop mainstream early on a wave of synthesizers and electronic rhythms. The group produced Billboard hits such as 1981’s “Boys and Girls,” “Sound of the Crowd,” and No. 3 charting track “Love Action.” The group’s true breakthrough was the classic single “Don't You Want Me,” from the album Dare!

Belinda Carlisle

Known for her role as the lead singer in the late ’70s, early ’80s all female pop group The Go-Go’s, Belinda Carlisle makes her Wolf Trap debut as part of Regeneration Tour 2008.

Carlisle’s debut album, Belinda, went gold and featured the No. 3 hit single “Mad About You,” establishing her as a respected solo artist. Shortly after, Carlisle released Heaven on Earth, her most popular solo album featuring the No. 1 title track “Heaven on Earth,” “I Get Weak,” and the Top 10 ballad “Circle in the Sand.” In 1989 she released a successful third album titled Runaway Horses, spawning the hit singles “Leave a Light On” and “Summer Rain.” Carlisle recently released her eighth solo album, Voila, a collection of classic French pop tune covers all sung in French.

ABC

Electro-pop group ABC joins Regeneration Tour 2008 in support of their April 2008 release Traffic, an album featuring the original group members with new techno-pop infused tunes. The ABC members came together in 1980, charging the music scene with their 1981 debut single, “Tears Are Not Enough,” which secured a place on the U.K. Top 20 charts. The following year the group caught fire with three more Top 10 hits with “Poison Arrow,” “The Look of Love,” and “All Of My Heart,” from the album The Lexicon of Love. The record climbed the U.K chart to No. 1, earning them instant name recognition. The band’s follow up album, Beauty Stab, showcased the group’s departure from pop/funk sounds and transition to guitar-based rock. The album featured “That Was Then But This Is Now” and “S.O.S.” In 1985, the release of their record How to Be a...Zillionaire! spawned the dance beat hit “Be Near Me,” becoming the group’s first American Top 10 hit.

A Flock of Seagulls

Popular for their iconic hairstyles and eccentric outfits, ’80s band A Flock of Seagulls makes their Wolf Trap debut showcasing their robotic dance pop tunes from the new wave era. Their 1982 hit single “I Ran (So Far Away)” earned the group the No. 3 spot on the Billboard chart; the group’s follow up hits included “Wishing (If I Had a Photograph of You)” and “Space Age Love Song,” which went to No. 30. The group’s most recent release, 2003’s I Ran: The Best of, features top hits from their previous records and various remixes embodying the spirit of the ’80s new Romantic movement.

Naked Eyes

Currently touring in support of their most recent release, Fumbling with the Covers, which features a list of cover tracks by artists from Elton John to Jimi Hendrix, Naked Eyes makes their debut on the Filene Center stage. Made famous by their radio-friendly cover of Burt Bacharach and Hal David’s “Always Something There to Remind Me,” the group is responsible for a slew of original hits including “Promises, Promises,” and “When the Lights Go Out.”
