Schooner Fare
Thursday and Friday, December 3 & 4, 2009 at 8 p.m.
$25
Although grounded in traditional maritime tunes, Schooner Fare brings its expanded repertoire of various folk, pop, and original songs to The Barns at Wolf Trap for the 24th consecutive year and 29th lifetime performance. Formed in 1975 by brothers Chuck and Steve Romanoff and the late Tom Rowe, Schooner Fare has developed a cult-like following through their energy-filled concerts and diverse recordings featuring complex harmonies and a variety of instruments including the guitar, banjo, electric bass, and pennywhistle. They are currently working on their 15th album scheduled for a 2011 release.
From their first booking for $150 in Portland, Maine to local weekend television jobs and their first steady gig at the Holy Mackerel (where they still perform weekly), Schooner Fare has risen to success at a national level through multiple television, radio, and concert hall performances. The band’s latest record, And Both Shall Row, is dedicated to the memory of Tom Rowe who passed away in 2004. Now performing as a duo, the Romanoff’s decided that they could not replace him—spiritually or physically—and have adjusted their style accordingly to best represent the trio’s “Down East” brand of music for eager audiences across the country.
