Vienna, VA—The Barns at Wolf Trap delivers the folk piano music of one of the most successful contemporary instrumental artists, followed by the husky rock vocals of a previous American Idol contestant. Performing in his melodic folk piano style, George Winston takes the stage for three straight nights of New Orleans inspired songs from February 26-28. Bo Bice wraps up the weekend with energizing rock songs steeped in country and blues on Sunday, March 1.

The celebrated “rural folk” pianist makes an esteemed return to The Barns to perform hits and compositions from his latest release, Gulf Coast Blues & Impressions, as well as selections from his seasonally themed recordings, including some R&B and stride piano. This album pays homage to New Orleans as well as Winston’s favorite pianists, Henry Butler, James Booker, Professor Longhair, Dr. John, Allen Toussaint, and Jon Cleary. Highlighting his technical and soulful abilities, the album’s most revered piece is Winston’s extended arrangement of the New Orleans classic When the Saints Go Marching In. For more than 30 years Winston has produced 15 critically acclaimed albums, with his 1994 release, Forest, winning a Grammy Award for Best New Age Album. Winston developed his own “folk piano” style with influences from instrumental R&B, rock, and North American folk music, earning him the title of a “musician of luminous grace” from Rolling Stone magazine.

In keeping with Winston’s desire to support the Gulf Coast after hurricane devastation, all proceeds from his most recent album are donated to organizations devoted to hurricane relief in the New Orleans area. In line with these philanthropic efforts, Winston will be conducting a canned food drive at the performance, and he encourages Wolf Trap patrons to bring a donation of a non-perishable food item in support of the Capitol Area Food Bank VA Branch. A portion of the merchandising income will also be donated directly to the food bank the night of the show.

Bo Bice

Known for his commanding and husky rock vocals, Alabama native Bo Bice quickly rose to fame after achieving runner up status on American Idol’s fourth season. After the competition, Bice produced the No. 1 hit single “Inside Your Heaven” and released his first album, The Real Thing, which reached No. 4. Departing from the clean-cut rock songs of his debut record, Bice’s latest release, See the Light, highlights his genuine rock spirit and is deeply rooted in Southern rock with influences from country, blues, and soul. Having written each song on the album, “Bice spends See the Light concentrating on what he does best, which is the kind of soulful, vaguely funky Southern rock the Black Crowes used to churn out by the bucket load,” raves the LA Times. In his Barns’ debut, Bice features the versatile tracks on this album, ranging from the blues rock number, “Witness,” evoking the sounds of Lenny Kravitz, to the emotional ballad, “I’m Gone.”

Patrick Mitchell

Patrick Mitchell complements his powerful vocals and piano work with emotionally charged songs based on his life experiences. As a singer/songwriter, he draws upon such influences as Robert Plant, Sting, and Ray Charles, producing songs that he describes as “falling somewhere between anguished pleas and sweet melodies.” While currently pursuing his solo career, Mitchell is also the lead singer of the Nashville-based rock band Black Honey. Mitchell will showcase his 2008 release, Change the Day, performing stirring and heartfelt songs that reflect his motto, “music is life.”
