Vienna, VA—The Barns at Wolf Trap leads the Northern Virginia music-loving community into inauguration week with four consecutive nights of music ranging from opera to flamenco- influenced guitar jams from January 14-17. Al di Meola, World Sinfonia ’09 explores the intricate landscape of finger-picking flamenco guitar on Wednesday, January 14, followed by Patty Larkin’s pervasive, experimental guitar sound on Thursday, January 15. To close the week, ticket buyers can look forward to a Discovery Series performance from Wolf Trap Opera Company alums Keith Phares and Patricia Risley on Friday, January 16, and the debut Wolf Trap performance from a renewed and re-inspired Carlene Carter on Saturday, January 17.

Returning to Wolf Trap following a masterful 2007 performance, Al Di Meola brings his highly inventive and eclectic guitar style to The Barns for an instrumental performance that encompasses classical, rock, jazz, and world-beat elements. Di Meola continues to heavily integrate selections from his most recent release, Diabolic Inventions and Seduction for Solo Guitar, Volume I, Music of Astor Piazzolla into each live performance, as a tribute to his mentor and late Argentinean tango master, Astor Piazzolla. Di Meola is also highly regarded for his founding of, and contributions to, the Super Guitar Trio with Paco De Lucia and John McLaughlin, resulting in the 1981 benchmark record, Friday Night in San Francisco, which achieved over $2 million in record sales.

Patty Larkin returns to The Barns at Wolf Trap in continued support of her critically acclaimed 2008 release, Watch the Sky. Showcasing her surplus of distinct musical abilities, the album has been described as “impressive” by Billboard and Larkin as “one of the finest acoustic guitarists in the world” by Vintage Guitar Magazine. Her signature style pervades the broadest reaches of blues, jazz, roots, Celtic, and folk music, earning her a die-hard fan base throughout the New England region. Winning a record 11 Boston Music Awards, Larkin was recognized through a “Patty Larkin Day” in the city for her impact on the community. Larkin’s accomplishments extend to contributions on movie soundtracks such as Random Hearts and Sliding Doors, as well as covers by artists Holly Cole and Cher. This multitalented artist keeps the surprises coming and excites fans with an ever-evolving persona.

As part of Wolf Trap’s continued Discovery Series program, Metropolitan Opera and Wolf Trap Opera Company alums Keith Phares and Patricia Risley make their esteemed return to The Barns stage for an evening of opera classics and a new work never before heard in a concert setting. Accompanied by Wolf Trap Opera Company Director Kim Pensinger Witman on piano, Phares and Risley will serenade the audience in a broad repertoire of material from some of the 19th and 20th centuries’ finest composers including Susan Kander and Francis Poulenc. Known for their versatility, the pair will accentuate the evening with a world premiere performance and Wolf Trap commission of a new work from American composer Jake Heggie.

Born into country music royalty, and heiress to one of the most bountiful music legacies in history, Carlene Carter arrives at The Barns for her highly anticipated Wolf Trap debut performance. Daughter of the legendary June Carter Cash and Country Music Hall of Famer Carl Smith, and stepdaughter of the massively influential Johnny Cash, Carter’s exposure to music and opportunities for professional growth were limitless as an aspiring musician in Nashville, Tennessee. Carter is currently touring in support of her 2008 release Stronger, a poignant ode to her family’s legacy and a lyrical reflection of her new outlook on life. In addition to tunes from Stonger, Carter will reprise her chart toppers from the ’90s, including the Grammy nominated “I Fell in Love.”
