Michael McDonald
Armed with a soulful, husky baritone that retains the effortless, laid-back ambiance characteristic of late ’70s California pop/rock, Michael McDonald’s sound is nearly impossible to characterize with his unique blend of soul, Motown, jazz, and rock. Early on, McDonald’s career was initially popularized through his work as a back-up singer with Steely Dan and eventual front man for the country-rock group, the Doobie Brothers. As a solo artist, McDonald has enjoyed considerable success with hits “Taking it to the Streets,” and Grammy Award-winning “What a Fool Believes,” and has almost single handedly re-popularized the Motown work of Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye, as evidenced by his 2008 release, Soul Speak.
Boz Scaggs
Blues, R&B, and rock ’n’ roll crossover artist Boz Scaggs returns to the Filene Center stage armed with more than 20 career releases that span a multitude of musical genres, including his most recent release, Speak Low (2008,) which features original takes on classic jazz standards by Hoagy Carmichael and Duke Ellington. Scaggs debuted at Wolf Trap in 2008, and promises a memorable follow-up performance rich with selections from his 2003 jazz masterpiece But Beautiful, the Grammy nominated Come on Home which features covers of hit songs by legendary artists spanning a multitude of genres, and of course, the interpretive Speak Low.
