Sardonic, witty, and irrepressible folk troubadour Loudon Wainwright III arrives at The Barns in support of his 2008 release, Recovery¸ a record replete with fresh takes on older, classic Wainwright originals. Having been in the game for 40 years, Wainwright’s vision for Recovery was to examine his songs from the outside in, drawing upon his four-decade-long career as a musician to provide a more contemporary and reflective experience for his listeners. Songs written as a young man in his 20s can now be heard and contemplated through the thickened lens of a much wiser and experienced artist. Wainwright continues to pursue work in film and television, with a BBC II series called Loudon & Co, his on-screen role in the hit comedy Knocked Up, and a small part in The 40-Year-Old Virgin. Building on his screen involvement in Knocked Up, Wainwright also contributed music to the film which can be heard on his 2007 album Strange Weirdos: Music from and Inspired by the Film Knocked Up.

Ari Hest

Independent entrepreneur, and rapidly ascending singer/songwriting Ari Hest arrives at The Barns for his highly anticipated Wolf Trap debut. Hest is best known for his tightly constructed and beautifully delivered indie-pop/rock ballads, and for spearheading his entrepreneurial “52” project. “52,” which started in January 2008, features the release of one new, original song each week for an entire year through a membership website. After opting out of his record deal with Columbia Records this past summer, Hest was quick to act on the artistic freedom afforded to independent artists, and came up with this viral way to share his music. Subscribers vote and comment on favorite songs, and at the end of the year, those with the highest votes will either be re-recorded or appear as-is on a future studio record. Thus far, through this grassroots medium, Ari has had over 1000 fans subscribe, vote on their favorites, and share downloads with their friends in order to help build his fan base.

Luke Brindley Band

Luke Brindley is a veritable entertainment icon in the Northern Virginia area, gaining notoriety through his ownership of Jammin’ Java, and his presence as a locally based, yet nationally known musician with recent record reviews in The Washington Post, Rolling Stone, and Paste Magazine. Luke is performing in support of his brand new Five Songs EP and launched a late summer/early fall tour alongside artists Ben Lee, Pat McGee, and Ari Hest. 2008 has been a particularly kind year for Luke—he was voted by Paste Magazine into the second to last round to play the 2009 Cayamo Cruise with Patty Griffin, Lyle Lovett, John Hiatt, and more; his song “Loving Arms” was placed on the soundtrack to a new documentary called 10 Yards about fantasy football; and he was selected for the Emerging Artist Showcase at the 2008 Falcon Ridge Showcase in Hillsdale, New York.

Although inexorably linked to life’s more depressing topics of exploration with a penchant for writing about death, violence, and loss of love, Warren Zevon has had a massive influence on today’s breed of folk-rock musicians. Aside from the candid emotional explorations inherent in his songwriting, Zevon’s friendship and musical kinship with Jackson Browne was instrumental to his success, evidenced by Zevon’s rise to fame after the Browne produced Warren Zevon and Excitable Boy in ’78 and ’76, respectively. A daunting and often insurmountable task for any musician, Zevon’s songs hold rare universal appeal. His influence on the songwriting community inspired David Letterman to devote an entire show to Zevon’s legacy. Zevon died in 2003, three weeks after the release of his last album, The Wind. 26 eclectic artists will celebrate Zevon’s genius on November 21.
