$16

Fresh off their receipt of 2007 Washington Area Music Awards (Wammies) for Artist of the Year, and Roots Rock Recording of the Year for Live at the Barns: The Legendary Wolf Trap

Recordings, Volume Two, D.C. area favorites, the Grandsons, make their triumphant return to Wolf Trap after a sold out 20th anniversary show at The Barns. Described by a fan as “American music in a blender with the lid off,” the Grandsons offer a wildly exuberant and infectious live experience with and diverse elements taken from New Orleans rhythm, blues, rockabilly, swing, and country two-step.

Priding themselves on avoiding repetitive themes in their lyrical content, attendees will enjoy hilarious songs about hitch hiking and heartbreak, mob bosses’ daughters, finding happiness on a tight budget, overly aggressive young ladies, civil engineering and supermarket tabloids. Live music enthusiasts can also hear the Grandsons on Raise The Roof–A Retrospective: Live from The Barns at Wolf Trap, a benefit album for Wolf Trap’s numerous education programs.

For 20 years at The Barns at Wolf Trap, thousands of patrons at more than 50 performances have been dazzled by John Eaton, renowned pianist, vocalist, and musicologist. Once again, The Barns proudly welcomes Eaton for a three-part Barns performance series. To kickoff the 2008-2009 performances, Eaton presents Indiana on Our Minds–An Evening of Music by Cole Porter and Hoagy Carmichael, an exploration of the classic repertoire from two Hoosier-born songwriter/composers.

A testament to jazz heritage, Eaton celebrates the artistry of such American innovators as the Gershwin brothers, Duke Ellington, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, and Benny Goodman, instilling his passion in all who listen. Among his many accomplishments, Eaton has been the keynote speaker in the American popular music lecture series at The Smithsonian Institution for the past 12 years, is featured in nationally broadcasted lectures on radio and television, and performed a command appearance in the East Room at the White House.

Wolf Trap celebrates an honored relationship with Eaton, including a series of live recordings which delivers an inventive approach to learning through and about the arts, furthering Wolf Trap and Eaton’s commitment to widespread artistic education. The latest in this collection Blowin’ in the Wind: The ’60s Music Revolution, features Eaton, renowned songwriter Bill Danoff, co-author of “Take Me Home Country Roads” and founding members of Starland Vocal Band, and bassist Jay Leonhart in a personal and musical conversation as they examine the enduring and influential musical forms that emerged from that decade. Highlights of the new CD include the impact of the Beatles, Bob Dylan, and reflections of Washington, D.C.’s revered Cellar Door music club that served as a launching pad for so many explosive musical careers.
