Cowboy Junkies

The upcoming Cowboy Junkies performance offers a rare opportunity for patrons to witness an amphitheater act perform in an intimate indoor setting. The affectionately named “Junkies” previously performed at Wolf Trap on the Filene Center stage in 2007, but are poised to deliver an identifiably personal and casual set at The Barns, drawing heavily from their 2007 release Trinity Revisited, and featured tracks from commercially viable films Natural Born Killers and The Truth About Cats & Dogs. The Junkies recently launched a new website; offering downloads of their catalog, music exclusive to the site, and free streams.

Lee Harvey Osmond

Most closely associated with “acid-folk,” which is best described as the antithesis to traditionally upbeat folk music with dark, murky instrumentals and latent lyrical themes, the popular Canadian bred Lee Harvey Osmond opens for Cowboy Junkies in its Wolf Trap debut. Led by guitarist and vocalist Tom Wilson, the band is currently touring in support of A Quiet Evil, released this June featuring an inventive blend of deep bass, soulful vocals, and dark, hypnotic rhythms.

Stanley Clarke Trio
With: Lenny White-percussion, and Hiromi-piano
Thursday, October 15, 2009 at 8 p.m.
$45

Stanley Clarke is perhaps the most celebrated bass player in the history of the instrument, and has made an indelible impact on the long and glorious tradition that is jazz with multiple Grammys, Emmys, and lifetime achievement awards to his name. Credited as the first bassist to headline sell-out tours across the globe, Clarke is known as a virtuoso in his craft, evidenced by his invention and introduction of two new instruments: the piccolo and the tenor bass.

Percussionist Lenny White and renowned pianist Hiromi from Shizuoka, Japan, join Clarke’s most recent collaborative trio. Together, they recently released the experimental, explorative album Jazz in the Garden, featuring varied material from traditional Japanese folk to an eccentric cover of the Red Hot Chili Peppers classic, “Under the Bridge.”

The Canadian Brass
The Discovery Series
Founder’s Day Celebration
Friday, October 16, 2009 at 8 p.m.
$40

In celebration of Wolf Trap’s founder Catherine Filene Shouse, the Canadian Brass returns to The Barns stage for the first time since the spring of 1988. Approaching their fourth decade as a quintet, this critically acclaimed ensemble has reached the height of their creative proliferation, releasing a new CD at the rate of close to once a month. They are pioneers in a sense, as they continue to buck the trend of decreased studio recordings, and ultimately, record sales. Their more than 60 recordings to date include works by Purcell, Vivaldi, Gabrieli, Pachelbel, Beethoven and Wagner, but they are especially drawn to the works of Bach. The ensemble has appeared on The Tonight Show, Today, and Entertainment Tonight, and recently released a live performance DVD titled Three Nights with Canadian Brass.

Christopher O’Riley
Saturday, October 17, 2009 at 7:30 p.m.
$25

Best known for his transcriptions of Radiohead music and as host of NPR’s From the Top program, Christopher O’Riley arrives at The Barns for his Wolf Trap debut. Originally a classical pianist, Chicago-native Christopher O’Riley now pours the majority of his efforts into arranging pieces from contemporary rock musicians; most notably Radiohead, Nirvana, Nick Drake, Pink Floyd, and Elliot Smith. O’Riley admits to a minor obsession with Radiohead, evidenced by his recording and release of True Love Waits: O’Riley Plays Radiohead (2003) and Hold Me To This (2005,) both of which pull from the band’s extensive catalog. His latest album, Out of My Hands, was released this year and includes his take on Nirvana’s “Heart Shaped Box.” In additions to his interpretations of rock music, O’Riley also continues to arrange pieces by classic composers Chopin, Beethoven, and Busconi. Wolf Trap patrons will marvel at his ability to bridge the gap between classical and contemporary rock/pop, visually enhanced by a sea of multi-colored strobe lights.

An Evening with: Nick Lowe
Sunday, October 18, 2009 at 7:30 p.m.
$30

Two years after hosting a sold out Nick Lowe tribute show featuring some of the metro area’s most recognizable pop acts, The Barns at Wolf Trap presents the “Jesus of Cool” himself. Lowe arrives after the early 2009 release of Quite Please…The New Best of Nick Lowe, a monster two-disc anthology featuring 49 tracks spanning Lowe’s lengthy career. Lowe rose to prominence in the ’70s by penning hit songs for the Pretenders and Elvis Costello, ultimately helping to launch the pub rock movement with his casual “indie” approach to songwriting and performances. Not one to pigeonhole himself, he successfully forayed into a variety of genres, most notably with the country and roots-rock tinged Nick Lowe and his Cowboy Outfit (1984,) The Rose of England (1985,) and future crossovers into jazz and Americana.
