Vienna , VA—Following a highly successful 2008 Filene Center season which shattered the pre-existing gross ticket sales record, The Barns at Wolf Trap begins its 2008-2009 season with American folk legend Noel Paul Stookey of Peter Paul & Mary on Friday, October 10. New Orleans based zydeco quartet the Iguanas performs Saturday, October 11, and the sassy, Virginia-based blues trio of Saffire—The Uppity Blues Women closes the week on Sunday, October 12.

Following the 40th anniversary of the historic “March on Washington”, activist, artist and founding member of the popular folk trio Peter, Paul & Mary, Noel Paul Stookey returns to The Barns to kick off the 2008 fall season. With over 45 albums to his credit, Stookey released three in 2007 titled Facets, Song for Megumi, and Promise of Love. Aside from his successful solo career and ubiquitous status as an agent for social, political, and environmental causes, Stookey continues to record and tour with Peter, Paul & Mary, oversees a children’s multimedia software organization, and works as an artist-in-residence, editor, and producer at Northfield Mt. Hermon prep school in Massachusetts. Visit this MySpace link for a video performance of Stookey’s original, “In These Times.”

Armed with the aptly named If You Should Ever Fall on Hard Times, their forthcoming studio record and first since 2003, The Iguanas arrive at Wolf Trap to share their post-Katrina tales of loss and recovery in their hometown of New Orleans, Louisiana. Despite its more somber tone, the album shares the same prime elements as 2003’s Plastic Silver 9 Volt Heart, offering the quartet’s signature blend of roots-rock, swamp pop, Tex-Mex, and New Orleans R&B. Selections from the album can be heard on their label’s website, and video footage from a performance at The Blue Moon Saloon in Lafayette, Louisiana in March, 2008 can be accessed via the band’s website.

Saffire—The Uppity Blues Women
Sunday, October 12 at 7:30 p.m.
$25

With seven studio records, several solo projects, and one best-of compilation for Alligator Records in the rearview mirror, Saffire—The Uppity Blues Women has risen “from virtual obscurity to one of the most popular, witty, and just plain satisfying acoustic blues groups on the scene today,” says People magazine. The all-female trio performs on a variety of instruments, most notably the finger-picked guitar, harmonica, boogie piano, mandolin, and fiddle. Aside from their robust collection of covers and soul-gripping original work, the group is well known for their humorous lyrics which take on a new breed of life in a live setting. Popular songs include “Middle-Aged Blues Boogie,” “Ain’t Gonna Hush,” and “Bitch with a Bad Attitude.”
