Wolf Trap teaching artists conduct professional development activities both inside and outside of the classroom.
Classroom residencies are at the heart of the Wolf Trap Institute’s approach.
A Wolf Trap teaching artist works side by side with an infant/toddler, preschool, or kindergarten teacher to:
- demonstrate how to use performing arts experiences to get children more engaged
- improve learning in areas specified by the required curriculum
- ensure the performing arts become integrated into the teacher’s daily routine
Wolf Trap teaching artist Rachel Knudson works with teacher Jasmeet Kaur to use movement to teach mathematical concepts including measurement (big/small).
Wolf Trap teaching artist Michele Valeri works with teacher Claire Beth to use puppetry to enhance storytelling and reinforce literacy skills.
How residencies work
- Residences are either 1 or 8 weeks. During that time, teaching artists and teachers collaborate on goals, formal planning, classroom implementation, and assessment.
- Once the Wolf Trap teaching artist leaves, the teacher has lesson plans, a toolbox of arts-integrated techniques, and hands-on experience.
- Classroom residencies take place throughout the greater Washington, DC area; in communities where Wolf Trap has national affiliates; and throughout the country. Schools from any state can contact Wolf Trap about arranging a residency.
Professional development workshops and customized trainings
Workshops are held nationwide. They focus on dance, music, drama, puppetry—a range of options

Each workshop provides participants with tools to achieve goals in specific areas, such as literacy, science, math, problem-solving, classroom management, and many more.
Workshops/training at a glance
- Held in 1 day, approx. 3 hours (multi-day customized trainings can also be arranged)
