The Silkroad Ensemble creates music that is contemporary and ancient, familiar and foreign, traditional and innovative, and draws on styles from around the world to create a new musical language. Founded by cellist Yo-Yo Ma, the group has been called “vibrant and virtuosic” (The Wall Street Journal), “one of the 21st century’s great ensembles” (Vancouver Sun), and a “roving musical laboratory without walls” (The Boston Globe). Yo-Yo Ma will not be appearing at this performance.
With a repertoire spanning contemporary, improvisational, and ancient traditions from around the world, the Silkroad Ensemble has been connecting the foreign and the familiar through a new musical language since early 2000. “One of the 21st century’s great ensembles” (Vancouver Sun
), this ever-expanding collective of vibrant and virtuosic global artists brings audiences together with never-to-be repeated concert experiences that are riveting and hope-filled. Osvaldo Golijov’s Falling Out of Time
marks 20 years of creating new music, with a poignant song cycle that embodies Silkroad’s commitment to connecting strangers and building curiosity and understanding for a better world. Written for three voices, electronics, kamancheh, pipa, sheng, trumpet, percussion, and string quintet, Falling Out of Time
is a beautifully unified musical, mythical walk towards breath.
“Osvaldo Golijov's gorgeous new creation reflects David Grossman’s transcendent work in the language Osvaldo speaks so well: music. As the book does, Osvaldo and Silkroad achieve a remarkable in-between space, one in which each of us can explore the grief and intimacy that no one lives without. Falling Out of Time is a reminder to pause and listen to all that we have in common, and it is not to be missed.” — Yo-Yo Ma, Silkroad Founder
