Vienna, Virginia (August 1, 2019) – Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts today announced the first performances of the 2019-2020 season at The Barns at Wolf Trap, its historic 382-seat indoor venue. “The Barns provide an intimate, relaxed, and comfortable atmosphere that allows Wolf Trap fans to experience pure talent and artistry up close and personal year-round,” said Arvind Manocha, President and CEO of Wolf Trap Foundation. “This season, patrons can enjoy legendary and new artists, spanning genres from rock, folk and Americana to chamber and world music.”
In keeping with Wolf Trap’s mission, The Barns at Wolf Trap highlights artistic exploration and accessibility to a broad range of music lovers in an intimate indoor setting. Composed of two 18th-century barns made of hand-hewn wood beams and panels, The Barns opened in 1981 and is well known for providing a distinct and impressive musical experience with its excellent acoustics and striking architecture.
Among the initial slate of shows in the 2019-2020 season, six artists make their Barns at Wolf Trap debuts – including guitarist extraordinaire Leo Kottke; Broadway star Sutton Foster; “The Acoustic Ninja” Trace Bundy; Silk Road Ensemble, the musical mission started by Yo-Yo Ma to fuse cultures through music; Spanish guitar ensemble Flamenco Legends; and more.
Returning favorites include singer-songwriter Storm Large; Americana artist Aoife O’Donovan; American drummer and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Max Weinberg; Celtic Rock band Enter The Haggis; Eileen Ivers’ A Joyful Christmas show; indie/folk band Over The Rhine; the incomparable singer-songwriter Karla Bonoff; Masters of Hawaiian Music; Tony award-winner John Lloyd Young; Richmond-based rockers the Pat McGee Band; two nights with pianist Jim Brickman; Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Ronnie Spector & The Ronettes; and more.
Chamber Music at The Barns 2019-2020 performance season emanates from Fiona Maddocks’ book Music for Life: 100 Works to Carry You Through and opens with Artistic Advisor Wu Han at the piano with her husband and frequent collaborator cellist David Finckel, exploring two emotional extremes in Joy and Sorrow, through the works of Bach, Mendelssohn, Glazunov, and Chopin. The series musically expresses Drama Notturno, Songs of Thanksgiving, Exuberance, and Pilgrimage through performances by The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center; the Brentano String Quartet; the Escher String Quartet; and pianist Jeffrey Kahane.
