Studio Artists come from some of the best music schools in the country. They are singers of significant potential who are either currently or were recently enrolled in a university or conservatory voice program.

About the Studio Artist Program

Wolf Trap Opera’s Studio Artist program supports the transition from student to professional singer. Studio Artists gain professional experience by understudying principal roles, singing smaller roles and in choruses, and performing in recitals and "Studio Spotlight", an evening of staged scenes from operas and musical theatre.

Offstage, Studio Artists work with a curated group of master teachers, guest artists, and WTO music staff to advance their audition and performance techniques, and personal artistry. Additional training topics include use of language, acting and improvisation, public speaking, audition preparedness, crossover singing, materials review, and the business aspects required for a professional singing career.

Who Are Studio Artists?

Each year, 16–20 emerging singers of significant potential who are either currently or were recently enrolled in a university or conservatory voice program are selected as Studio Artists. Studio Artists must have technical foundations secure enough to allow them to spend the duration of the program away from their regular voice teachers. All casting assignments for Studio Artists will consider the singer’s current readiness and will be made with an eye toward principles of healthy vocalism, education, and advancement.
