Tim O’Brien with Jan Fabricius
Tim O’Brien and his wife Jan Fabricius present an acoustic music roots repertoire that’s at once both original and traditional. The original songs on their recent release Paper Flowers offer tangible proof of a deep collaboration and serve as a narrative of the couple’s life together.
Since O’Brien’s emergence as a singer, instrumentalist, and songwriter with the iconic ’80s bluegrass group Hot Rize, the West Virginia native has blazed a constantly evolving musical trail. He’s written songs for artists like Garth Brooks and the Dixie Chicks, released rootsy classics like Red on Blonde (1996) and The Crossing (1999), and earned a few Grammy Awards in the process. Fabricius left her Kansas nursing career in 2013, soon emerging as O’Brien’s musical foil—harmony singer, mandolin player, and contributor to many original songs in their repertoire. Paper Flowers includes a dozen co-writes with the venerable Tom Paxton who says, “I’m proud to be a part of it. All I want is to carry on with this.”
